Name: Derrick Bishop

Role: Vice President

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Like most kids growing up in Canada, I aspired to play professional hockey in the NHL.

Can you tell us a bit about your professional journey and what brought you to Erion Insurance Group? Throughout my professional career, I have been fortunate to gain experience in senior leadership roles within large companies. The assignments I was given allowed for full accountability of people, growth and profit targets, while directing and leading large-scale operations in both the broker and direct writer arena throughout Canada. I then became interested in Erion Insurance Group upon learning the values the company lives into. It is a hardworking, honest and community-based company that delivers an excellent Customer Experience to its clientele. Upon learning more, I quickly realized this is a company that I want to be a part of.

What excites you most about your new role as Vice President? The ability to influence our clients' customer experience by promoting a comprehensive customer/broker interaction that will uncover hidden insurance needs. This will allow us to assume a leadership position within the industry as a trusted advisor by offering customized insurance solutions, while ensuring our clients needs and coverage are met.

How would you describe your leadership style? My goal is to help with the growth and empowerment of our team members by providing opportunities to enhance their careers, while providing a supportive and creative environment for development. This allows our teams to be at their best when serving our clients and community.

What are the key challenges you see in the industry right now, and how do you think Erion can address them? I believe there are two major challenges within the industry that we need to keep top of mind. Number one is climate change, and number two is cyber security. Erion can best prepare our client base through educational conversations around risk and protection that is available. I believe this type of trusted advisor approach is our competitive advantage and differentiator within the industry.

What do you think is the most important quality for a successful team? The ability to see the vision of the company and how their role contributes to the overall success of their clients and company. When team members understand the "why" behind a company vision, activities quickly align and everyone wins.

What’s one professional lesson you’ve learned that’s stuck with you? Never get too high or too low with wins or setbacks. Remain consistent and disciplined with your approach and work ethic. Good things will happen!

What is your favourite hangout spot in Niagara? Casa Mia restaurant

If you could share one message with the company or our customers, what would it be? One item I would share is prioritize coverage over price. It is important to grow and evolve with your broker over time to ensure changing needs are always met. The best priced policy is not always the best in coverage. Look for overall broker value which is combination of coverage, personal service and peace of mind.
